Concept Study / First Design Stage

A simple first-stage landscape study — and why it matters

This is deliberately not one of our more complex projects. There is no steep terrain, no integrated lighting concept, no lounge architecture and no technically demanding construction detail. It is a straightforward first-stage landscape study for a heavily sealed villa exterior.

The purpose is to show how much can already be achieved with relatively limited planning and implementation effort. Reducing hardscape and introducing shade, privacy, planting structure and Mediterranean vegetation can fundamentally change how an outdoor space feels and performs.

In a climate with more than 300 days of sunshine a year and increasingly intense summer temperatures, large sealed surfaces are often counterproductive. Even a relatively simple intervention can create a cooler, softer and far more comfortable garden environment.

The mature olive tree immediately creates a usable place in the garden: somewhere to sit, read, have a drink or even work outside in a much more pleasant microclimate.

More complex projects — including sloping sites, integrated lighting and mood lighting, irrigation, lounge and retreat areas, planting strategies and detailed technical coordination — are developed as part of our full landscape architecture service.

Private Clients

Your house was designed. Your garden deserves the same level of thought.

With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, your garden on the Costa Blanca should be an extension of your home — not leftover space around it. We design outdoor spaces for the whole day: from morning coffee and shaded afternoons to evening dining, lighting and entertaining.

Private gardens of ordinary villa scale are a core part of our work. Scale is not the filter; the seriousness of the planning task is. We bring the same professional planning discipline to private residential work that we bring to larger projects.

For holiday property owners

Holiday guests on the Costa Blanca don't choose on price and location alone. They choose the complete picture: a beautiful property with a garden they actually want to be in — evenings outside, lighting, atmosphere, somewhere worth staying. Offer that, and you're no longer competing with the listing two scrolls down on Airbnb or Booking. A professionally designed garden, together with a well-maintained property, is what makes guests book — and pay more per night to do so.

Your Garden as an Extended Living Room

Building a new home? Involve the landscape early.

Early landscape planning is particularly valuable on the sloping sites of the Costa Blanca. Levels, terraces, access, circulation, planting, shade, privacy, the pool and outdoor living areas can be considered before expensive construction decisions become difficult to change. When substantial money is being invested in a new home, the outdoor space should be planned with the same care as the building itself.

Professional Landscape Architecture

Not every garden requires a landscape architect. But where layout, levels, shade, privacy, circulation, planting, construction or the relationship between house and garden need to be considered as a whole, professional planning makes a real difference. Our work is planning-led.

We don't start by asking how a hotel landscape could look better. We start by asking how the property could work better.

The Planning Process

01

1 — Listen & Understand

Whether you are planning a new home or want to improve an existing garden, start with a conversation. We discuss your property, your wishes and how you live. For suitable projects, we arrange a site visit to take measurements and photograph existing conditions.

02

2 — Study & Analyse

Good landscape architecture is a process — not an answer improvised during a site visit. Back in the studio, we study your property's topography, constraints and potential to develop the first approaches to an overall solution.

03

3 — Design

We present a principal design direction. You can commission the landscape design as a standalone first stage. Once the direction is agreed, you can continue immediately, pause, or resume later. The choice is yours.

Detailed Planning & Implementation

We can continue to coordinate the project while you are away from Spain. Our services extend to execution planning, contractor coordination, site supervision and quality control. We ensure the agreed design is executed correctly by independent specialist contractors.

Architects & Developers

Solutions for Architects & Developers

We complement your architectural work with professional landscape architecture. From one of Berlin's larger landscape architecture offices with decades of experience in complex projects, we now operate directly on the Costa Blanca.

We understand the rhythm of architecture and development processes: deadlines, interfaces, approvals, and construction documentation. The best overall results are achieved when outdoor space is thoughtfully integrated from the early planning stages.

For Architects

A realized example is the DVG data center in Hannover, developed in close collaboration with the architects Hascher and Jehle. We created a high-quality Mediterranean-style interior landscape that harmoniously completed the project.

We deliver precise, construction-ready landscape plans that integrate smoothly into your design. This results in fully resolved properties for your clients and projects that meet the highest standards without unnecessary extra effort.

We have long-standing experience working successfully with architects, developers, and investors. Reliability, clear communication, and practical solutions are our standard. We bring this expertise to the Costa Blanca today.

For Promotores & Construction Companies

Outdoor space as a sales asset. Planned like a product.

Buyers from Northern and Central Europe know the difference between a professionally designed landscape and a last-minute garden. That difference shows in viewings, in photography, and in price. We deliver construction-ready landscape documentation, coordinated with your project timeline and budget. Site supervision is available on request. The result is not a garden as an add-on — it is outdoor space that delivers on the premium promise you make to your buyers. We have spent decades working alongside developers and investors in Berlin. We know what this kind of collaboration requires: reliability, scalability, and clear communication. We bring that to the Costa Blanca today. For development and promotora projects, we work throughout Spain — mainland, Balearic Islands, and Canary Islands. For private residential clients, our focus remains the northern Costa Blanca.

Outdoor Hospitality Performance

We look at the outdoor environment as part of the hotel product — not simply as landscape.

We are landscape architects and hospitality consultants. Our particular strength lies in combining academic expertise and extensive professional experience in landscape architecture with first-hand experience of hotels across different markets and categories, and a clear understanding of hospitality as a commercial business. This allows us not only to identify where a hotel’s outdoor environment is underperforming, but to translate that analysis into concrete landscape architectural solutions designed to improve both guest experience and revenue performance — creating more opportunities for on-property spend, including F&B, encouraging longer and more valuable dwell time, and helping the hotel generate more revenue from its existing assets.

For us, these objectives are inseparable. When guests find the spaces they need, understand the property intuitively and genuinely enjoy spending time there, they have fewer reasons to leave. They stay longer, use more of the hotel’s facilities and create more opportunities for on-property revenue. At the same time, a stronger guest experience supports satisfaction, recommendations, stronger reviews and repeat stays. This is why we treat landscape architecture not simply as an aesthetic investment, but as part of the hotel product, its positioning and its commercial performance.

We identify the commercial opportunity — and, as landscape architects, we can design the spatial and landscape solution to realise it.

An outside perspective can reveal potential that becomes difficult to see in day-to-day hotel operations. We combine that perspective with landscape architectural expertise and hospitality experience to identify where existing spaces, assets and guest journeys can perform better — for the guest and commercially.

Guests don't generate revenue in their rooms. They generate revenue where they choose to spend their time.

We don't start by asking how a hotel landscape could look better. We start by asking how the property could work better.

This is what that looks like in practice.

Full repositioning — concept study

Repositioning is not all-or-nothing. Some properties need a few targeted interventions to unlock significant F&B and on-site spending. Others have the scale and ambition to be fundamentally reimagined. Either way, the outdoor space audit tells you exactly where your property sits — and what level of intervention makes sense for your goals and your budget.

The Outdoor Space Audit

Our work combines hospitality consulting, guest and commercial analysis, spatial strategy and landscape architecture, translating identified opportunities into targeted, technically feasible interventions. Our expanded audit covers:

guest journeys · guest segmentation and profiles · circulation and wayfinding · spatial legibility & zoning

shade and microclimate · seating and dwell environments · F&B catchment & accessibility · acoustics and privacy

lighting & planting · utilisation of existing physical assets · maintenance & OPEX · high-impact interventions

Intelligent Programming

Families, couples, business travellers and groups have different requirements for activity, privacy and relaxation. Good spatial planning allows these profiles to coexist successfully without unnecessarily compromising one another.

These are not simply aesthetic problems. They are operational and commercial ones — and many can be addressed through intelligent spatial planning before major capital investment is considered.

The objective is measurable hospitality performance: longer and more valuable dwell time, greater opportunities for on-property spend, stronger perceived value and an environment guests are more likely to recommend and return to.

A proven ability to shape perception

This project was developed for a corporate headquarters in Germany. The objective was to create the perception of a Mediterranean landscape for employees without external views — using mature olive trees, structured planting, and considered light to transform an interior atrium into an environment people chose to spend time in. It demonstrates our ability to transform architecture through landscape. The principle is directly transferable to hospitality environments.

From Strategy to Implementation

Where an intervention makes sense, we translate the strategy into coherent, technically feasible landscape architecture and spatial design. This may include selective reorganisation of existing landscapes, circulation, planting, screening, spatial separation, terraces, seating environments, shade, lighting and F&B-related outdoor areas.

Repositioning does not have to mean complete redevelopment. Existing mature vegetation and structures are treated as assets. As an independent practice, implementation can be carried out by your existing contractors or other specialists, with our design development or site supervision where required.

The Studio

In 2020 the Berlin chapter came to an end. The experience did not. Following a period of transition, Nicolás initiated the relocation of the practice from Berlin to Spain.

Nicolás and Edelgard then established Costa Blanca Garden Studio together, carrying forward decades of professional landscape architecture and planning experience from Berlin to the Mediterranean.

Together they combine decades of experience in large-scale and complex projects with a fresh perspective: Edelgard's deep seniority and knowledge of Mediterranean planting, local conditions, and Spanish building regulations, paired with Nicolás' contemporary approach.

From private villas and chalets to commercial and hospitality projects – we plan and deliver everything with German precision and a clear understanding of what works here.
